SCOPE

Stairs Painting in Hillside: A Modern Makeover

This project in Hillside began with a client’s last-minute change of plans. After removing the old carpet to install a new one, the homeowner decided instead to showcase the staircase itself and contacted Golden Deco for a professional painting solution.

The project began with extensive preparation, as the underlying wood had numerous small breakages and holes that needed to be perfectly filled and sanded. Once the surface was smooth and flawless, we applied a high-quality primer to ensure a durable and even finish. For the final stage, we used a combination of oil-based and water-based Dulux paints, according to the customer’s specific color selection, to create a stunning and resilient result.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why were both oil-based and water-based paints used on the stairs?

For staircases, we often use different paint types to maximize durability and aesthetics. Typically, oil-based enamels are used on high-impact areas like treads for their hardness and scuff resistance, while water-based paints might be used on risers or spindles for their quick drying time and low odor. The final choice was based on the client’s preference.

How durable is a painted staircase against daily foot traffic?

Extremely durable, provided the preparation is done right. The key is meticulous prep work—filling all holes and damages—and using a quality primer, just as we did on this project. This ensures the top coats of paint have a strong bond that can withstand daily use for years.

What was the biggest challenge in this staircase project?

The main challenge was the initial condition of the stairs after the carpet was removed. The surface had many imperfections that required significant preparation to create a perfectly smooth foundation suitable for a high-quality paint finish.
